Nabil El Makhloufi was born in 1973 in Fez, Morocco
Figurative painting is dominant in El Makhloufi’s aesthetic approach. Expressionist, symbolist, and a drawing master, he uses very often plain-colours, which reveals a sketchy brushwork and gives his paintings an enigmatic quality which substitutes for a very deep meditation on moments of the past, seen and lived realities, reconsidered and magnified through the lens of distance. His compositions become, therefore, more like dream visions and reveries. Although rooted in his native country’s culture, El Makhloufi’s works are nourished by the land where El Makhloufi lives. His art is conceived in a permanent communication between cultures.
El Makhloufi studied at the School of Visual Arts of Leipzig (Germany), a city well known for its figurative school, the very famous Neue Leipziger Schule. El Makhloufi’s works have been featured in solo and group exhibitions in Frankfurt (2015-2017), Casablanca (2013-2016-2019), London (2016), Dakar (2010) and Beirut (2008). He is also the recipient of the 2014 Cité des Arts award, Paris (France).
His works are held, among others, by the Museum of African Contemporary Art Al Maaden (Morocco), the Banque Populaire (Morocco), the bAT Campus Galerie Collection (Germany).
